"How the Pill and Other Contraceptives Work" by Chris Kahlenborn, MD.
The following is a quick overview of some of the dangers of the Pill, along with direct quotes from the pharmaceutical companies and medical organizations that advocate use of the Pill.
The primary function of the Pill is to prevent ovulation. A woman who does not ovulate will not produce an egg to be fertilized. However, a secondary function of the Pill is to change the lining of the uterus so that if she does ovulate, and the egg is fertilized, the environment becomes too hostile for the fertilized egg to survive. It is this secondary effect that makes the Pill an abortifacient (i.e. a drug capable of inducing an abortion).
"...these pills take over the menstrual cycle from the normal endocrine [hormonal] mechanisms. And in so doing they inhibit ovulation and change the characteristics of the uterus so that it is not receptive to a fertilized egg." Dr. J. Richard Crout, Director of the Food and Drug Administration's Bureau of Drugs
FDA Consumer, No. 76-3024, May 1976
"Clearly, every available brand of combined oral contraceptive has the capacity to act against the implantation of an early embryo. If fertilization takes place, the embryo will likely reach the uterus about seven days after conception. But all OCs are designed to prevent the embryo from embedding in the endometrium due to the drugs' hormonal impact on diminishing buildup of the uterine lining." Editor,
Physician's Desk Reference, 50th ed. (Montvale, NJ.: Medical Economics, 1996).
"IUDs seem to interfere in some manner with the implantation of the fertilized egg in the lining of the uterus." Searle Laboratories, manufacturer of the Cu-7 IUD, "For the Patient:Cu-7," (Chicago: Searle Laboratories, 1977)
